Q

Why are there behavioural requirements for food?

A
  • motivation to forage, which if not satisfied may lead to injurious pecking

Q

What are the nutritional requirements for?

A
  • feathers- growth and replacement, moulting, methionine and cysteine
  • egg and shell- calcium and phosphorus, proteins albumen and yolk, egg
size and chick size, yolk pigments- canthaxanthin= a carotenoid
  • bone health in laying chickens
  • meat- protein

Q

Importance of water

A
  • essential, sick animals have a greater requirement
  • insufficient supply will have impacts on growth and performance- increased mortality
  • Administer vaccines and medication for whole flock
  • behavioural requirement for waterfowl

Q

Energy requirements

A
  • as the energy density of feed increases, intake decreases, this may lead to decreased intake of other nutrients, diets adapted
  • how to change energy density: fats- increase density; dietary fibre- reduces energy density

Q

fibre requirements

A

8
Q

negative effects of Non-starch polysaccharides

A

Water-soluble: increases digesta viscosity, leading to reduced nutrient absorption and loose faeces/ colitis
Water-insoluble: entrap nutrients
