POTS A03 8 marker evaluation Flashcards
what is an ethical evaluation on POTS research
informed consent
how is informed consent a positive point
all 112 pp and one of their parents gave written consent for them to particicpate in the study. this meant that all pp had informed consent and willingly agreed to partake in the study
how does this support POTS research
t/f this study can be deemed as ethical as all pp gave informed consent to partake and so this doesn’t break any of the ethical guidelines of informed consent
what is a weakness of POTS research
ethnocentric sample
how is POTS sample ethnocentric
POTS used a volunteer sample of 112 pp aged only from 7-17 from the USA
how does this reduce the validity of POTS sample
t/f this is an ethnocentrical sample as it only considers a specific age range and one country. the findings on the effectivness of drugs and CBT in reducing OCD obsessions and compulsions are unrepresentative of the wider population and so cannot be generalised
what is a strength of POTS research
standerdised procedure
how does POTS have a standerdised procedure
POTS used the childrens yale-brown obsessive compulsive scale to measure the pp symptoms. all pp where also diagnosed using the DSM iv and all those in the drug condition recived the same drug of sertraline and all those in the CBT condition had a psychiatrist follow the same CBT handbook
how does this support POTS research?
t/f the study on various OCD treatments is replicable for consistant findings on the effectivness of OCD treatments increasing the reliablitily of OCD treatments
what is a weakness of POTS study
temporal validity
how does POTS study lack temporal validity
all 112 pp where diagnosed with OCD using the DSMiv which is outdated meaning CBT may not be effective in improving obsessions and compulsions
how does this oppose POTS study
t/f the findings on CBT and drug therapy in the treatment of OCD in reducing obsessions and compulsions lacks external validity
