Potassium Sparing Diuretics Flashcards
1
Q
Types of PS Diuretics
A
- Sodium Channel Blocker: Amiloride, Triamterene.
- Aldosterone Antagonist: **Spironolactone, Eplerenone **(Act on late distal tubule and collecting tubule)
2
Q
Mechanism of Action
A
Spironolactone and Eplerenone binds to aldosterone receptorss, blocking the action of aldesterone. Aldesterone causes sodium and water retention and pottasium excretion
Traimterene and Amiloride do not block the aldosterone receptors but instead directly interere with Na+ entry via ion channels
3
Q
Adverse Effects
A
Hyperkalemia
4
Q
Therapeutic Use
A
- prevent K+ depletion in aldoseronism
- primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s Syndrome)
- Hypokalemia
5
Q
Drug Interactions
A
- Triamterene and Spironolactone can be inhibited by NSAIDs.
- Oral Potassium administration should be discontinued if Potassium-sparing Diuretics is being administered
