Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors Flashcards
1
Q
Types of CAIs
A
- Acetazolamide (Diamox)
- Dichlorphenamide (Keveyis)
- Methazolamide (Neptazone)
2
Q
MOA
A
Inhibits dehydration and rehydration reaction
Inhibition of NaHCO3 reabsorption as these agents increase water, sodium, potassium and bicarbonate excretion; causing alkaline urinary PH
3
Q
Adverse Effects
A
- Metabolic Acidosis
- Renal Stores
- Hypokalemia
- Drowsiness and parasthesia, tingling, burning, pricking or numbness of skin
4
Q
Therapeutic Use
A
- Glaucome: Ciliary body of the eye secretes ions from carbonic anhydrase catalyse conversion of CO2 + H2O to carbonic acid leading to aqeous humor production
- Inhibition of CA activity decrease rate and volume of aqeous humor production, decreasing intraocular pressure
