Osmotic Diuretics Flashcards
1
Q
Osmotic Diuretics
A
- Inhibits reabsorption of water and sodium
- Increase osmolarity of blood and renal renal filtrates
- Have major effects in parts of the nephron that are fully permeable to water (proximal and descending loop of Henle)
NB Given IV

Q
Types of Osmotic Diuretics
A
- Mannitol
- Isosorbide
- Urea
- Glycerin
3
Q
Therapeutic Use
A
- Reduction of intraoccular pressure
- Promote urinary excretion of toxic substances
- Treatment of cerebral edema
- Measurement of glomerular filtration rate
4
Q
Adverse Effects
A
- headache
- nausea
- vomiting
- hypotension
- lightheadedness
- contusion
5
Q
Mechanism of Action
A
Acts on proximal tubule and loop of henle to create osmotic force that pulls water into the nephron and increases the excretion of nearly all electrolyte
