Posture Flashcards
1
Q
Define posture
A
- alignment of each body segment in relation to adjoining segments
2
Q
Define ideal skeletal alignment
A
- body’s center of mass direction over it’s base of support should follow: external auditory meatus, midway through shoulder (acromion), through bodies of lumbar vertebra, slightly posterior to hip joint, slightly anterior to midline of knee joint, & slightly anterior to lateral malleolus
3
Q
Define structural faults
A
- result from congenital or developmental anomalies, disease, or trauma
- example is Scheuermann’s kyphosis
4
Q
Define functional faults
A
- result from poor postural habits
- examples are forward head posture and rounded shoulders
5
Q
Define Florence Kendall’s theory
A
- muscles on continuous stretch will be weak
- muscles in a shortened position will be tight
6
Q
Describe anterior pelvic tilt
A
- kyphotic-lordotic posture
- increased lumbar lordosis, hips in relative flexion, lengthened hamstrings & abdominals, & shortened iliopsoas, rectus femoris, & lower back extensors
7
Q
Describe posterior pelvic tilt
A
- flat-back & swayback posture
- flattened lumbar lordosis, hips in neutral or relative extension, lengthened iliopsoas, & shortened hamstrings & abdominals
8
Q
Describe an informal postural assessment
A
- assess at first sight of patient & periodically throughout initial exam
9
Q
Describe a formal postural assessment
A
- plumb line, well trained eyes, palpation of landmarks, removal of excess layers of clothing
- landmarks in anterior, posterior, & lateral views
- standing, sitting, & dynamically
