Neural Tension Management Benefits Flashcards
1
Q
Describe nerve gliding/sliding/flossing
A
- you’re moving the nerve in the same direction
2
Q
Describe nerve tensioning
A
- you’re pulling on the nerve is opposite directions
3
Q
Areas of potential entrapment of the ulnar nerve
A
- arcade of struthers
- cubital tunnel
- guyon’s canal
4
Q
Areas of potential entrapment of the median nerve
A
- ligament of struthers
- pronator teres
- carpal tunnel
5
Q
Areas of potential entrapment of the radial nerve
A
- arcade of frohse
- extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB)
6
Q
What is the goal of neural tension management
A
- maximize excursion of the nerve while minimizing strain
- put the nerve under tension but just below the patient’s symptoms
7
Q
What are the basic principles of neural tension management
A
- nerve glides should always be symptom free
- according to Butler sliding produces more excursion than tensioning
- rule out cervical involvement first (nerve root)
8
Q
Steps in ulnar nerve tension testing
A
- scapular depression
- shoulder abduction
- shoulder external rotation
- elbow flexion
- forearm pronation
- wrist extension
- contralateral side bending of the neck
9
Q
Steps in median nerve tension testing
A
- shoulder depression
- shoulder abduction
- wrist & digit extension
- forearm supination
- shoulder external rotation
- elbow extension
- contralateral side bending of neck
10
Q
Steps in radial nerve tension testing
A
- shoulder depression
- elbow extension
- forearm pronation
- shoulder internal rotation
- wrist & digit flexion
- contralateral side bending of neck
