Postmodernism Flashcards
Definition of Multiple realities
The media bombard us with images which dominate how we view the world. They do not reflect social reality, the images are mulitiple realities provided by the mass media.
People interpret these images differently
Multiple Truths
Due to multiple realities, the idea of a single truth has one, no longer one meaning
Living The Image
Images we experience from the media become (if not more) real than our direct experiences. (eg. Princess diana’s death)
Sociological views: Garrod (CBB)
reality shows like CBB are blurring the distinction between reality and hyperreality
Sociological views: Strinati (CONSUMER CHOICES)
Strinati Emphasises the power and importance of the mm in shaping consumer choices
Popular culture bombard us media images through books, mags, TV , radio increasingly dominate how we see ourselves
Baudrillard:
Images replace reality TV news presents a sanitized view of events with battles shown as media constructed spectatcles that we cant differentiate them from.
Baudrillard calls this hyperreality with the media presenting what he calls ‘simulacra’ when artifical copies of real events viewed simultaneously across the globe
Impact of mass media on society according to postmodernists?
1) Allows us to criss cross time and space barriers
2) EVerything is fluid
3) We can pick and choose our own identities and lifestyles (jeans/music)
