- eg low self esteem- overcome thr criminal activities designed to earn respect

- new type of deviant exists in a society where survelliance is so evident, individuals who reject consumerism + survelliance are considered deviant
- eg rejection of cookies (consumer tracking survelliance)
- consumerism + survelliance hand in hand as survelliance controlled by prv businesses
risk society

- we are now risk conscious
- mass media made us aware of risk in society
- as individualistic we only protect ourselves and family from risk
- displaces crime, allows it to fester + grow bigger
