Posterior Triangle of the Neck Flashcards
Superficial Fascia
Below Skin, include fatty tissue and platysma
Deep fascia
NB carotid sheath made from all these layers (CC (IC), IJV, CN10)
1) Investing Layer (Superficial Layer of deep fascia)
2) Pretracheal layer
3) Prevertebral ( Deep layer of deep fascia)
Cervical Spaces
Pretracheal, Retropharyngeal, Prevertebral
Neck Regions
Diagram, Region 5 is Posterior triangle
Posterior Triangle borders
ANT: Posterior border of SCM
POST: Anterior borderof SCM
BASE: Sup border of Middle third of clavicle
ROOF: Superficial Fascia (NOT investing layer) (fatty tissue, skin, cutaneous veins and nerves)
FLOOR: Prevertebral layer
ROOF Components in more detail
External Jugular Vein (with superficial cervical lymph nodes)
NERVES: Transverse Cervical; Greater Auricular; Supraclavicular. Come from ERBS POINT
Arteries in Post triangle (3)
Transverse Cervical, Suprascapular ( Both from thyrocervical branch), 3rd part of the Subclavian
Base of Post triangle
Nerves in post triangle
Spinal Accesory Nerve! innervates SCM and trapezius (Can run anywhere in post triangle) (shoulder abduction)
Brachial Plexus at base
Muscle in Posterior triangle Also lymphatics. Are one plane deep to accessory nerve
inferior belly of omohyoid
Floor contents
Pre vertebral layer, from SUP to INF
Splenius Capitis; levator scapulae; posterior scalene, middle scalene, anterior scalene
Lymph nodes
Base of the skull nodes (can be pathology identifying)
To superficial cervical nodes
to Deep cervical nodes,
So cervical lymphadenopathy is not telling of pathology location
CVC
Possible due to IJV being lateral to CC, through SCM/ posterior triangle
SAN study
Not seen on ultrasound, can not be predicted by surface anatomy,
