Posterior thigh & Popliteal fossa Flashcards
1
Q
What is the fascia lata? What does it form?
A
- Layer of deep fascia surrounding the thigh muscles
- Forms 3 intermuscular septa that attach to the linea aspera dividing the thigh muscles into 3 compartments
- Anterior extensor, posterior flexor and medial adductor compartments
2
Q
Name the muscles which make up the Hamstring
A
- Semimembranosus
- Semitendinosus
- Biceps femoris (long head)
- Hamstring part of Adductor Magnus
3
Q
What are the functions of the hamstring at the hip?
A
- Extend & laterally rotates hip
- Extends the thigh
- Medially rotates the thigh
4
Q
What are the functions of the hamstring muscles at the knee?
A
- Flexes knee
- Laterally rotates leg when knee partly flexed
- Flexes leg
- Medially rotates leg
5
Q
What does the sciatic nerve divide into in the posterior thigh? Locate these
A
- Common fibula (peroneal) nerve- deviates laterally
- Tibial nerve- continues in the midline
- Both enter the popliteal fossa
6
Q
What muscles make up the boundaries of the popliteal fossa?
A
- Biceps femoris
- Semimembranosus
- Semitendinosus
- Medial & lateral heads of gastrocnemius
7
Q
What structures form the floor & roof of the popliteal fossa?
A
- Floor= Capsule of the knee joint & adjacent surfaces of femur & tibia & inferiorly popliteus muscle
- Roof= Deep fascia continuous with fascia lata
8
Q
What is the posterior compartment of the leg divided into and by what?
A
Superficial & deep sub-compartments by transverse intermuscular septum
9
Q
What muscles are contained within the superficial sub-compartment?
A
- Gastrocnemius
- Soleus
- Plantaris
10
Q
Which muscles flex the knee as well as being a plantarflexor of the ankle?
A
- Gastrocnemius
- Plantaris
