Anterior & medial compartment of thigh Flashcards
Which bone does not take part in the knee joint?
Fibula
Describe the patella
- Triangular sesamoid bone
- Develops in the tendon of the quadriceps muscle
- Lateral & medial facets
- Base, apex, articular & anterior surface
What is special about Vastus Medialis?
- Pulls more obliquely on the patella
- Prevents patella being pulled too laterally
- If underdeveloped may lead to recurrent dislocation of the patella
Why is the femoral triangle clinically important?
- Vascular access
- Femoral hernia
- Vascular surgery
- Lymphatic spread of disease
What are the borders of the femoral triangle?
- Roof= fascia lata
- Floor/base= pectineus, iliopsoas, adductor longs
- Superior=Inguinal ligament
- Lateral= medial border of sartorius
- Medial= medial border of adductor longus
What does the femoral triangle contain?
Lateral to medial: Femoral nerve Femoral artery Femoral vein Femoral canal (contains deep lymph nodes & vessels)
What muscles are supplied by the femoral nerve?
Pectineus, iliacus, sartorius, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis/intermedius/medialis
What does that adductor canal contain? Between what?
Femoral vessels & saphenous nerve between the femoral triangle and popliteal fossa
What are the boundaries of the adductor canal?
Anterior= Sartorius Posterior= Adductor longus & adductor magnus Lateral= vastus medialis
What does the anterior thigh contain?
Quadriceps, pectineus & iliopsoas
What is the chief function of the medial muscles of the thigh?
Adduct thigh at the hip
Where is the adductor hiatus located?
Between hamstring & adductor part of adductor magnus
What muscles are contained in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
Vastus Medialis Vastus Intermedius Vastus Lateralis Rectus Femoris Sartorius Pectineus
What muscles are contained in the medial compartment of the thigh?
Adductor Magnus (adductor part) Adductor Longus Gracilis Adductor Brevis Obturator Externus
What is the patella tendon?
Continuation of quadriceps femoris tendon inferior to patella
