Posterior thigh and popiteal fossa Flashcards
Innervation of the posterior compartment?
sciatic nerve branches
Vascular supply of the posterior compartment?
profunda femoris
function of the semitendinosus?
hip extension and knee flexion
function of the semimbranosus?
hip extension and knee flexion
function of long head of biceps femoris
hip extension and knee flexion
function of short head of biceps femoris?
knee flexion
innervation of the short head of biceps femoris?
fibular nerve
what creates the polpiteal fossa?
semimembranosus, biceps femoris, medial and lateral head of gastrocnemius
what happens if there is an absess or tumor in this space?
generates significant pain bc the area limits expansion of space
clinical significance of the popliteal artery?
anatomoses so that there is no loss in circulation during knee flexion, the anastomse goes in a circle around the knee in order to protect against falling on knees
what does the popliteal fossa protect?
tibial n. common fibular n. popilteal a.
Note the popliteal artery, as well as anteirior and post tibial, fibular branches
study
note the sciatic nerve and its split into tibial and common fibular nerve
study
what does the popiteal vein get blood from?
lesser saphenous vein
where does lymph get drained after popliteal fossa?
deep inguinal lymph
