Posterior Thigh Flashcards
Superior Gluteal Nerve Exit Point
Greater sciatic foramen, superior to piriformis
superior gluteal nerve supplies:
Gluteus Medius
Gluteus Minimus
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Gluteus Medius Attachments
P: External Surface of ilium
D: Lateral surface of greater trochanter
gluteus medius action/NS
A: hip medial rotation (only anterior fibres), extension, abduction
keeps ipsilateral pelvis level while standing on one leg
NS: superior gluteal
gluteus minimus attachments
P: external surface of ilium
D: anterior surface of greater trochanter
gluteus minimus action/NS
A: hip abduction, medial rotation
NS: superior gluteal
tensor fasciae latae (TFL) attachments
P: ASIS and anterior part of iliac crest
D: via iliotibial band, attaches to anterolateral tubercle of tibia
tensor fasciae latae action(function) and NS
A: abduction, flexion, medial rotation of hip
keeps ipsilateral pelvis level when standing on one leg
NS: superior gluteal
role of hip abductors while walking
prevent drop of contralateral hip
Inferior Gluteal Nerve exit point
Exits pelvis via greater sciatic foramen, inferior to piriformis
Inferior Gluteal Nerve Supplies:
Gluteus Maximus
Gluteus Maximus Attachments
P: Posterior ilium, dorsal sacrum and coccyx, erector spinae aponeurosis and sacrotuberous ligament
D: via the iliotibial band and superior portion of posterior femur
Gluteus Maximus Action/NS
A: hip extension, lateral rotation
NS: inferior gluteal
Iliotibial Band Formation/Attachments
Forms via common distal attachments of gluteus maximus and TFL, attaches onto anterolateral tubercle of femur
Iliotibial Band function
Powerful abduction mechanism, stabilises lateral aspect of extended knee
