posterior leg muscles Flashcards
what are the three main posterior leg muscles ?
gastrocnemius
soleus
plantaris
what are the attachments of the soleus ?
origin - soleal line of tibia and proximal fibula
insertion - muscle blends with calcaneal tendon and inserts into calcaneus
where is the soleus located ?
underneath gastrocnemius
what are the actions of the soleus ?
plantar flexion of the foot
what is the innervation of the soleus muscle ?
tibial nerve
what is the blood supply to the soleus muscle ?
posterior tibial artery
what are the attachments of the gastrocnemius ?
origin - lateral head originate from lateral femoral condyle, medial head from medial condyle
insertion - inserts into calcaneus as part of calcaneus tendon
what are the actions of the gastrocnemius ?
plantar flexion at the ankle
flexion at the knee joint
what is the innervation of the gastrocnemius ?
tibial nerve
what is the blood supply to the gastrocnemius ?
medial and lateral sural arteries
what are the attachments of the plantaris ?
origin - lateral supraconydlar line of femur
insertion - blends with calcaneal tendon and inserts into calcaneus
what are the actions of the of the plantaris ?
plantar flexion at the ankle
flexion at knee
what is the innervation of the of the plantaris muscle ?
tibial nerve
what is the blood supply to the plantaris muscle ?
lateral sural artery
