Posterior Abdominal Wall Musculature and Lymphatics Flashcards
What is the origin of the Psoas major?
Lateral aspects and transverse processes of vertebral bodies and discs of T12-L5
What are the posterior abdominal wall muscles?
Psoas major Psoas minor Quadratus lumborum Transversus abdominis Iliacus --iliolumbar ligament
What is the insertion of the psoas major?
Lesser trochanter of femur via common tendon with iliacus (iliopsoas tendon)
What innervates the psoas major?
L2-L4 via lumbar plexus
What are the actions of the Psoas major?
Flexes thigh at hip
With feet fixed flexes trunk on thigh (at the hip joint)
Acting unilaterally side-bends trunk to same side
What is the origin of the psoas minor?
Lateral aspects of the bodies of T12 and L1, plus their intervening discs
What is the insertion of the psoas minor?
Pectineal line on superior ramus of pubis
What is the innervation of the psoas minor?
L1 and L2
What are the actions of the psoas minor?
Assists in extension and flexion of trunk; acting unilaterally side-bends trunk to same side
What is the origin of the quadratus lumborum?
Iliac crest and iliolumbar ligament
What is the insertion of quadratus lumborum?
Medial half of inferior border of 12th rib; tips of lumbar transverse processes
What is the innervation of quadratus lumborum?
T12-L4
What are the actions of quadratus lumborum?
Extends and laterally flexes vertebral column; fixes rib 12 during inspiration
What is the most lateral muscle of the posterior abdominal wall?
Quadratus lumborum
What is the origin of the iliacus?
Iliac fossa of pelvis
What is the insertion of the iliacus?
Lesser trochanter of femur via common iliopsoas tendon
What is the innervation of iliacus?
Femoral N (L2, 3, 4)
What are the actions of iliacus?
Flexes thigh at hip. With lower limb fixed, flexes pelvis on thigh
How far does the diaphragm superior surface extend?
Upward as far as 5th rib
