Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis?
A
It is a diffuse glomerulonephritis that occurs 1-12 weeks after a streptococcal throat or skin infection.
2
Q
What is the pathophysiology?
A
A streptococcal antigen is deposited on the glomerulus, causing a host reaction and immune complex formation.
3
Q
How do these patients present?
A
Usually with a nephritis syndrome
4
Q
What is seen on biopsy?
A
Not usually done unless atypical presentation.
Inflammatory reaction affecting mesangial endothelial cells
Immunofluorescence shows IgG and C3 deposits.
5
Q
What is shown by serology?
A
Increased ASOT (anti streptococcal antibodies), increased C3
6
Q
What is treatment?
A
Supportive,
95% recover renal function
