What is Henoch-Schonlein Purpura?
A
- HSP is a systemic variant of IgA nephropathy.
- It causes a small vessel vasculitis

What are the features of HSP?
A
- purpuric rash on extensor surfaces, typically the legs
- flitting polyarthritis
- abdominal pain (possible GI bleeding)
- nephritis

How is a diagnosis of HSP made?
A
Usually clinically.
- Confirmed with a positive immunofluorescence for IgA and C3 in skin or renal biopsy (renal is identical to Berger’s disease (IgA nephropathy)

What is the treatment?
A
Same as IgA nephropathy

What is the prognosis of HSP?
A
- 15% of nephritic patients progress to ESRF
- If both nephritic and nephrotic syndrome, 50% progress to ESRF
