GIDDENS 1992
Relationships now more equal as female independence grows and contraception mean reproduction not only reason for relationship.
Pure relationships- design to meet each other’s needs but unstable as can be ended at will by either partner.
What do post modernists believe about the family?
Family = socially constructed! no right family, family is whatever you want to call family. More diverse than ever!
We are individual social actors- chose based on what is right for us and will meet our needs not on what is right for society.
Class and patriarchy limit
BECK 1992
Negotiated family- equal, meet needs, less stable as free agents, haven from risk society.barisen due to increase in position of women and greater individualism.
Risk society- more choice and now more aware of risks.
STACEY 1998
Divorce extended family- choice good as freed women, in Silicon Valley life history study, women main instruments of change.
Morgan 1996
Can’t make sweeping generalisations on the family.
Weeks 2000
Long term shift in attitudes since the 50s on sexual morality, seen as personal choice. Growing acceptance of diversity but still strong tradition of family and marriage, divorcees remarry.
Hareven 1978
Life course analysis- people choose own structure and timing of events.
Meanings people give to these events- find out what hey think is important, good as family type now wilful choice.
Morgan 2007 - main theory
Routine and obligations within family more important- why conflict arises as individuals have different beliefs about what is their duty.
Families are not concrete structures, just things we do.
Society more fragmented, blurring between friends and family.
Context if wider structures and norms - ie gender scripts.
