Post Modernism Flashcards
What do post modernists believe modernist theories are?
Meta narratives
What methods do post modernists use?
They reject both positivism and interpretivism
What are meta narratives?
Any claim to the truth is just a meta narrative as it impossible to establish truth only competing versions of the truth.
What is a criticism of the post modernist rejection of meta narratives?
By sweeping away all theories it becomes a meta narrative itself. If we cannot establish the truth then we cannot influence policy so there would be no point to sociology
What can be used to support meta narratives?
There is no simple explanation for crime available for example there are many different individual motives such as Edgework.
What do post modernists believe about society?
We live in a hyper reality and media saturated society. This contributes too globalisation making us more interconnected. We are surrounded by simulacra so we live in a meta verse.
What are simulacra?
Signs which imitate realtity
What is the meta verse?
People are no longer able too distinguish signs from reality
What is a criticism of the meta verse?
It’s too deterministic, we are an active audience as illustrated by RAM
What do post modernists believe about identity?
Pick and mix model, our identity is no longer determined by cages.
What is a criticism of the post modern view on identity?
Conflict theories show how inequalities still exist. Those who live in poverty are not able to chose who they are through consumerism.
