The structure of capitalism consists not just of the economic base and superstructure but has 3 levels.
What does Althusser argue are the 3 levels of society?
- The economic level consisting of the economy and means of production 2. The political level consisting of the goverment and repressive state apparatus such as the army and the police 3. The ideological level consisting of the ideological state apparatus which are institutions which spread the dominant ideology and justify the power of the ruling class.
What is the key difference between Althussers levels of society and traditional Marxism?

He thought that Marx was flawed in linking everything to the economy. He believed in hegemony which places more emphasis on the ideology rather than just the economy in maintaining and influencing behaviour.

It moves away from the traditional structuralist approach of classic Marxism and more towards social action as Gramsci was interested in people’s ideas and meanings as he believed that people’s actions and ideas could bring about revolutionary change.
