post lab activity 1 & 2 Flashcards
It refers to the conscious observation and understanding of the surrounding and being aware of various actions that may have an impact in the environment in different aspects.
Environmental awareness
why is environmental awareness important
- understand the impact of human activities
- develop a sense of responsibility in addressing environmental issues and protect the environment
- promote sustainability and secure the resources for future generations
define environmentalism
it is a movement aimed at protecting and enhancing the quality of the natural environment
define environmental receptors
are areas that cld possibly be affected by environmental hazard
what are the 5 major areas for environmental awareness
air
land
water
natural resources
community
land pollution refers to the ____ into ____
spilling of waste
land areas
what is the effect of land pollution
destruction of land environment
affect the health of the community/ living organisms
briefly explain the causes of land pollution
industrialization:
weak environmental governance lets major pollution offenders degrade land freely through their mass production waste.
mining:
mining involves drastic landscape change to retrieve ores and minerals. however, direct habitat removal and indirect chemical contamination.
landfills:
diffusion of toxins into soils which rainfall spreads further afield, expanding the zone of land pollution from the original contaminated site.
sewage:
human waste and sewage is poorly managed, it ends up rotting in open areas instead of being safely contained and treated. as it rots, gases, chemicals and disease are released. hence spread sickness and polluting farmland rivers
agriculture:
pesticides may offer effective immediate pest control for crops, their excessive or sustained use can slowly degrade soil quality and long term fertility. This can make later cultivation much harder.
what can we do to protect our land from pollution
- waste management (garbage)
- practice organic gardening and organic pesticides
- dont use non-biodegradable products
4.use reusable materials = cut dow waste
it occurs when pollutants are release into bodies of water, affect its quality and thereby affecting its usage and the ecosystems that depend on them
water pollution
briefly explain the types of water pollutants
- sewage wastes:
pathogens, excess nutrients from untreated human discharge that poison aquatic environments and damage water quality - solid wastes:
rubbish, plastics etc might choke or kill aquatic life - toxic and hazardous wastes:
heavy metals and other hazardous chemicals often dump their wastewater improperly = flows from pipes to rivers - heat pollution:
hot water discharges from power plants and factories that raise water temperatures, reducing oxygen levels and disrupting aquatic ecosystems
it is the discharge of gases or particles into the atmosphere that accumulates faster than the environment’s ability to naturally diminish or absorb them
air pollution
enumerate the common air pollutants, its sources (and health effects)
- carbon monoxide:
vehicles, industrial plants (asphyxiation at high level) - sulfur dioxide:
volcano, power plant, industrial pants (throat & eye irritation, kill plant and animals, corrode metals) - fine particulates: soots & dust particles etc
vehicles, industrial plant (carcinogenic-cancer causing agents, respiratory probs) - greenhouse gases: - blocks heat energy from leaving the earth = increase in temp of earth
vehicles, industrial plants, gasoline-powered machines (many health effect, increase in global temp)
80% of air pollution caused by ____
vehicle emission
it is the unnecessary or loud sounds may be harmful to animale, humans and the surrounding community
noise pollution
briefly explain noise pollution
- effects on humans
(hearing loss, irritability, anxiety, decreased attention spam, communication problems) - effects on wildlife
(interferences with sound communication, problems with navigation)
what are the effects of pollution
loss of soil fertility
pollution of groundwater
habitat loss
deteriorating human, animal and plant health
loss of biodiversity
biodiversity van be measured by ____
species richness
it refers to the amount of variations of species in a community or ecosystem
species richness
IUCN
International Union for Conservation of Nature
briefly explain the classifications of threatened species
vulnerable species: Reduction between ≥ 20 to 50% of the species population
endangered species: Reduction of about ≥ 70% of the species population
critically- endangered species: Reduction of about ≥ 80% to 90% of species population
this are means or channels of mass communication that reach a wide audience for disseminating ideas, knowledge, any various information or expression
mass media
what are the different types of mass media
prints (publish)
audio (broadcast)
video (broadcast)
internet (new age)
what are the roles of mass media
- information dissemination
- educate
- entertainment
what are the similarities and differences in misinformation and disinformation (examples)
similarities: both are false, inaccurate info
differences: INTENT. disinformation is deliberately made with the intention to harm or deceive
misinformation (clickbait and satire-sarcasm but ppl cant tell that is sarcasam)
disinformation (climate and renewable energy disinformation)
this is a method of communication that addresses different scientific knowledge directed to set of audience that are not typically “science” person.
science communication
how to communicate science effectively
- know your audience
- what message to deliver
- in what medium shall I communicate the science effectively
what is the main medium in disseminating different types of mass media
internet
