environmental risk perception Flashcards
hazard vs risk
hazard - potential source of harm or danger (hazardous chemicals resulting from the spill at the manufacturing facility)
risk - likelihood probability that harm will occur because of exposure to a hazard (the likelihood and severity of adverse outcomes resulting from exposure to those chemicals)
examples of environmental hazard
air pollution from industrial and vehicular emissions
water contamination
climate change
it refers to the probability or likelihood of adverse effects or harm occurring to human health , ecosystems or property because of exposure to environmental hazards or stressors
environmental risk
it refers to how individuals subjectively perceive the potential risks associated with environmental hazards
environmental risk perception
what are the factors influencing risk perception
educational level - higher educational level can access info and critical thinking skills to analyze and assess risk accurately
ethnic background - cultural beliefs and values may affect how ppl perceive and assess risk
familiarity with the risk - ppl may hv been exposed to the risk before and became familiar with it
past experiences - previous experiences with other environmental hazard can shape how ppl deal with new ones
socio-economic factors - resources, living conditions and exposure
what are the influence of media on risk perception
media can sensationalize risk, leading to skewed perceptions
importance of accurate and balanced reporting to mitigate misinformation
for example: Fukushima Nuclear Disaster
media coverage led to heightened fear and perception of risk, impacting public opinion on nuclear energy
what are the implications for environmental management
understanding public perception crucial for effective risk communication and management
importance of engaging with communities and stakeholders to address concerns and build trust
incorporating diverse perceptive in decision-making processes
what are the content of the survey form
age bracket
status
source of news
environmental and health issue
What were perceived as having the highest and lowest risks? Did you observe any noticeable trends regarding their age group, status, and where they get their news?
perceiving risk can vary per individual
influenced by:
- age
- status
- source of news
Which environmental issue requires immediate attention, and what are the reasons for prioritizing it?
climate change/ global warming/ greenhouse gases
biodiversity loss
pollution
deforestation
solid waste
In addition to evaluating the risk, should we consider other factors? If so, what are they?
vulnerable populations
socioeconomic impacts
scientific evidence
policy and regulatory framework
