What does a gross decontamination consist of?
And what is the objective?
- Brushing and rinsing off debris in a systematic and thorough manner.
- To get rid of as much debris and products of combustion as possible. -
What items are needed to set up the gross decon area?
- Decon kit
- A pylon
- 44mm hose with decon nozzle
What things should be taken into consideration when setting up a Decon area?
Elevation: Uphill from the hot zone
Wind: Upwind from the hot zone
Space: Large enough to accommodate number of people needing decon
Drainage: Avoid creating slip hazards and beware of runoff
Safety: Out of collapse zone and safe from vehicle traffic or other hazards
Supplies: All supplies are laid out and in good condition and accessible
What items make up the decon kit?
- Wipes
- Disposable coveralls
- Hand brushes
- Seat covers
- Disposable bags for gear
- Gear tags
- Zip ties
- Medical gloves
Who should be up first for decon?
Person with lowest air, everyone should stay on air until decon is complete.
How do you perform decon is cold winter?
Minimal water should be used.
Brush off as much debris as possible
Don disposable coveralls over bunker gear until proper decon can be done at the station.
What is the goal of stage 2 decon?
To keep the cab of the apparatus clean as possible and to avoid secondary contamination back at the fire station. Must be done before entering the apparatus and before leaving the incident scene.
What is stage 1 decon?
Exit the hot zone and before entering rehab area or apparatus, perform a gross decon
What are the steps of doffing contaminated gear?
- Take extra caution to ensure gear has as little skin contact as possible
- Remove helmet while wearing fire gloves
- Have another member remove gloves, or do so as you would medical gloves
- Don medical gloves and then proceed to doff rest of bunker gear
- Empty pockets and place gear in clear plastic bags
- Fill out a duty gear/inspection tag
What is stage 3 of decon?
Perform a full and thorough decontamination of both themselves and all the tools and equipment used back at the station
What PPE needs to be worn for cleaning gear and equipment?
safety glasses
medical or rubber gloves
N95 (optional)
What needs to be done when cleaning the regulator (demand valve)?
Make sure SCBA cylinder is attached and open to a pressurized system
What should be used to clean firefighting gloves?
Utility sink with soapy water, uses a cloth or sponger, do NOT use a brush
