Fire Hose Flashcards
What are the 2 primary types of fire hose carried on CFD apparatus?
Supply Hose and Attack Hose
What is the purpose of supply hose and what are the 2 categories of supply hose?
To bring water from a source to the attack engine directly or through a relay.
Hard suction and high volume
There are 2 types of hard suction hose; describe the 2, older vs newer
Both are non-collapsible and wire reinforced, 3 meters
newer: made of transparent PVC
older; rubber lined inside and out

- found on quint or aerial
What is the most common material used for hose couplings? And what are its advantages?
- Pyrolite, lightweight coupling made of aluminum alloy with hard coating.
- It is durable, lightweight, and resistant to corrosion.
What is AMA, BAT, and BAF?
And what are the standards for this?
- Alberta mutual aid, British Columbia/ Alberta, British Columbia Forestry Standards
- Straight iron pipe threads for 38mm couplings and 8 threads per inch for 65mm couplings
What are the parts of 3 piece couplings?
- Male threaded shank
- Female threaded swivel
- Non-threaded shank to which the female swivel is attached
Male shank has lugs and exposed threads, female does not
What end of the hose leads to the nozzle, and which leads to the engine or egress?
- Female leads to nozzle
- Male leads to engine/ egress
How many lengths of the different sizes are found on the engines?
- 19mm, 2-30m and 2-15m “4”
- 44mm 1-30m high-rise “1”
- 44mm 2-15m bumper, 8-15m transverse “10”
- 65mm 1-15m high-rise, 4-15m transverse, 18-15m devils load “23”
- 125mm 10-30m supply bed “10”
What is the station compliment for each size hose?
- 125mm- none
- 77mm- none in station 4 lengths in DC station
- 19mm forestry hose- none in station 4 lengths of 15m and 30m in DC station
- 44mm 30m- 1 length for each engine
- 44mm 15m- full replacement for engine
- 65mm 15m- 10 lengths of replacement for each engine in station
What are the District Chief stations?
- East -4
- Central -16
- West -20
- South -39
- North -40
What are the methods of rolling hose? And describe each one.
- Service Roll, Male coupling at the core. Used when cleaning up hose and storing on racks
- Damaged Roll, female coupling at core. Hose that needs to be repaired.
- Single Doughnut Roll, 125mm pony, hose will be used directly from its rolled form. Both couplings on the outside
How often are the Apparatus hose loads to be changed? And what hose should be used?
- every 3 months and changed with station compliment and recorded in station log book.
When should hose testing and inspections be done?
- Annually
- After repairs
- After hard use
- On any suspicious of damage
Damaged hose should be tagged and marked and a FD1205 made and sent into stores
What are we looking for when we inspect the hose prior to testing?
- Vandalism
- free of debris
- mildew or rot
- chemical damage
- burns or cuts
- excessive abrasion
- vermin damage
- internal inspection at couplings for delamination of liner
What are we looking for when we inspect the hose couplings prior to testing?
- Damaged threads
- corrosion
- slippage on the hose
- out of round
- connections no roating freely
- missing lugs
- loose external color
- internal gasket
What is the color of the first and second transverse hose loads?
- first is yellow 44mm second is orange 44mm
What is the coupling part of the truck the transverse loads are connected too?
supply header
What are the components of a leader line/ transverse load?
- 4 lengths of 15m hose (44mm or 65mm), preconnected to each other and the truck, with a nozzel.
What row of the transverse hose do you make the grab loops? How long should they be?
- The second and third rows for the first set at 15-20cm (height to reach the side of the hose bed)
- The second set of grab loops is after the second coupling has been placed. approx. 15 cm or height of the hose bed.
Describe the 65mm attack bed. How many total length, and of what kind of load?
- 18 lengths of 65mm, 3 loads of 6 lengths (666)
- 2 rows of fast attack and 1 row of shoulder load.
What sex of coupling is loaded first in the fast attack and shoulder load?
- Fast attack: female
- shoulder load: male
Aprox how long should the grab loops be in the shoulder load? Do you need to use setbacks to prevent the load from bananaing?
4-6 inches and no setbacks in this load.
How deep should the setbacks be for the fast attack loads? How deep for 125mm supply bed?
- 2 inches fast attack
- 4 inches supply bed
How many firefighters are needed for loading each type of hose load?
- Scorpion/ bumper 1
- transverse lines 3 (1 on each side, 1 up top)
- devils load 3 (2 up top, one on the ground)
