Posology Flashcards
***percent concentration***
***weight of drug in g/100ml solution***
how to convert from percent concentration to mg/ml?
% x 10
how to convert from mg/ml to percent concentration?
mg/ml ÷ 10
how is a solution different from a suspension?
-the solute remains evenly distributed in the diluent -all parts of the solution contain equal parts of the solute
suspension
contain fine particles of insoluble drug suspended or dispersed in a liquid vehicle must be thoroughly mixed to disperse the particles throughout the liquid vehicle
drug reconstitution
add diluent (liquid vehicle) to a drug in powder form to make a liquid
define percent solution
weight of drug in g (x100) / volume of solution in ml
Explain ratios for percent solutions
5% solutions means 5 parts drug per 100 parts solution. YOU MUST REDUCE TO THE LCF BEFORE YOU CAN TURN INTO RATIO. So: 5/100 = 1/20 or 1:20 solution
Convert from ratio to percent solution
divide first number by second number multiply by 100 5/20 = 0.25 0.25 x 100= 25%
In what ratio is epinephrine solution generally supplied in? Name 2
Generally supplied as 1:10,000 or 1:1,000 solution
Remember: in proportions, -numerator must match numerator and -denominator must match denominator so that units can cancel
:)
**************define dilution explain the ratio 1:10 explain what makes up total volume**************
ratio of solute mixed with a diluent 1 part solute 9 parts diluent. overall solution has 10 parts TOTAL VOLUME = SOLUTE + DILUENT
3 STEPS OF DILUTION CALC
- How many mL of original concentration? 2. What’s the total volume after the dilution? 3. Difference between total volume and solute gives you diluent volume
Dilution formula?
V1C1 = V2C2 V2 = volume of resulting solution, includes solute and diluent
What is the formula to calculate flow rate in gtt/min?
