What are some rules when positioning a patient?
Maintain correct alignment
Change every 2 hours
Know mobility status and equipment needed
Know medical conditions and limitations
What are contractures?
Caused by a shortened muscle or joint from spasticity over a period of time
What is supine?
Laying on your back
What is prone?
Laying on stomach (pillow under hips and shins)
What is side lying?
Laying in your side (pillow between knees)
What is sims position?
Laying on stomach with one leg up
What is high Fowler’s position?
Laying on back with head of bed raised 90 degrees
What is semi Fowler’s position?
Laying on back with head of bed raised to 60 degrees
What is low Fowler’s?
Laying on back with head of bed raised 15-30 degrees
What is the purpose of Fowler’s?
Improves heart function, good for patients who had a stroke or feeding
What is the trendelenburg position?
Laying on back with foot of bed raised 15-30 degrees
Used for patients in shock
What is the reverse trendelenberg?
Laying on back with head of bed raised 15-30 degrees
Prevents vomiting and helps respiration
What is the dorsal recumbent position?
Laying on back with legs bent on the bed
Used for examinations
What is the lithotomy position?
Patient lying on back with feet in stirrups
Used for Pap tests
What is the purpose of using pillows?
Supports extremities
Elevates body parts off the bed
Relives pressure
