What happens to skin as people age?
Becomes thinner, fragile, slower healing process, wrinkles, sagging, cold easier and are at risk for heat exhaustion
What are some things to look for in the skin in your patients?
Changes in colour, moisture, temperature, texture, elasticity and any lesions
What are the two categories of baths?
Cleansing and therapeutic
What does a cleansing bath consist of?
Bed bath, tub bath, shower, partial bath and bag or disposable bath
What do therapeutic baths consist of?
Whirl pool bath, oatmeal baths, sits bath and tepid baths
What is a sitz bath?
Reduces swelling in genitals commonly used for women after giving birth
What is a tepid bath?
A Luke warm bath to reduce fevers
How do you perform female peri care?
Wash front to back, 2 swipes to the labia majora and 3 swipes to the labia minora
How do you perform male peri care?
3 circular swipes on the tip, down the shaft then the scrotum
What are pressure injuries?
Tissue damage on a surface with constant pressure often referred to decubitus ulcers
When a person is on bed rest, how often should you move the patient?
Every 2 hours
Define friction
Occurs when the skin is rubbing against skin or fabric
Define shearing
Occurs when pressure is exerted against the surface and layers of the skin and tissues slide underneath the body when it moves against the surface
What is maceration?
Skin that becomes too soft and break down if wet for too long
