Late Bottled Vintage Port

A

Vintage dated port from a (typically) non-declared vintage.

Often spends 4-6 years in cask before release.

They may carry the term Envelhicido em Garrafa indicating that they have benefitted from an additional of 3 years bottle aging.

Most do not benefit from bottle aging.

Are usually filtered prior to bottling. Although higher quality versions do exist that are un-filtered.

17
Q

What is

Envelhecido em Garrafa?

A

A labelling of a Late Bottled Vintage Port indicating the wine has benefitted from an additonal 3 years bottle aging.

18
Q

Crusted Port

A

*3 years min bottle aging

Sees up to 4 years cask aging before it is released.

Made from “very high quality” ruby port.

Name comes from the amount of sediment it has.

19
Q

Single Quinta Vintage Port

A

Ruby Port from a single vineyard.

Are typically sold from the same vintage as LBV.

Single Quintas are usually aged longer in bottle before release whereas LBV are aged longer in cask before bottling.

Closer to aged ruby port than vintage.

21
Q

Vintage Port

A

The Highest quality port.

(1-3% total production)

Cannot be bottled before June 30th on the third year following harvest.
Therefore has a minimum of 2.5 years in barrel.

Only from the best vintages. Port producers rarely will declare two vintages in a row. It is typically 3 out of every 10 vintages.

22
Q

Tawny Port

(Basic)

A

Typically paler wines.

Do not see extended cask aging.

23
Q

Aged Tawny Port

A

Aged Tawny ports are certified by the IVDP at each level for they “taste” according to their target age level.

  • *SOCALCOS**
  • The modern terracing system that is more widely spaced and does allow for mechanized harvesting
  • *VINHOS AO ALTA**
  • The modern non-terraced planting system. The vines are planted vertically to do away with terracing.
28
Q

What is

Leo do tergo?

A

A

Instituto dos Vinhos de Duoro e Porto

The regulatory body that oversees all production of wine in the Duoro (Duriense).

30
Q

What is

Vila Nova de Gaiao?

A

A suburb town of the city of Oporto in Minho.

Wines had to be shipped from Pinhao in Cima Corgo on ‘Barco Rabelo’

Until 1986 all Port wine had to be aged in this town. Joining the EU broke this monopolistic regulation.

31
Q

What are

Barco Rabelo?

A

The ships traditionally used to transport ‘Port Pipes’.

They traditionally sailed from Pinhao to Vila Nova de Gaiao for aging in the Port Lodges before release.

32
Q

Port Pipes?

A

Traditional Barrels used in Duoro.

  • *Duoro Valley = 550 L**
  • (makes sense. you add 110L Aquardente to 440L wine)*

Vila Nova de Gaia = 620 L

Shipping Port = 534.24 L

Note:
There are also ‘Pipes’ used in shipping in:
- Madeira = 418 L
- Marsala = 423 L
