Populations Flashcards
What are abiotic factors?
The non-living part of the ecosystem e.g Tides and waves on a rocky shore or nutrients such as nitrates or phosphates
What is an ecosystem?
A community of organisms interacting with one another, plus the abiotic environment in which they live and also interact. e.g. a pond or woodland
What is the community?
All of the populations living in the same habitat
What is population?
The number of organisms of the same species living within a defined area
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is species richness?
The number of species living in a defined area
What is species diversity?
The number of species living in a defined area with some measure of population size
What is a niche?
The role, activities, and location of an organism within a habitat
What is GPP?
Gross primary productivity
The total amount of organic matter made by a producer in a given time period
What is NPP?
Net primary productivity
The total amount of organic matter made by a producer in a given time period, minus the amount lost in respiration in the same time period
What is intraspecific competition?
A type of competition between members of the same species
What is interspecific competition?
A type of competition between members of different species
What is succession?
The progressive change in the composition of a community of organisms towards a stable climax community
What is primary succesion?
The progressive change in the composition of a community of organisms towards a stable climax community starting from an essentially lifeless beginning e.g bare rock/no soil
What is secondary succesion?
The progressive change in the composition of a community of organisms towards a stable climax community after an ecological disturbance e.g a fire
