Population growth and Regulation Flashcards
Population
All organisms of the same species in a particular area
Ecology
The study of the interactions of organisms with each other and with the physical environment
Community
All various populations in a particular area.
Ecosystem
A community of populations, as well as the nonliving environment.
Biosphere
The portion of the entire Earth’s surface- air, water, land- where living things exist.
Ecological succession
A change in community composition over time.
Primary succession
Occurs in areas without soil
Secondary succession
Occurs when soil is available
Pioneer species
The first species to come in and colonize in secondary succession.
Ex: weeds, grasses
Climax community
A community with a particular geographical area
Biotic potential
Highest rate of per capita increase.
It measures how fast a population can grow.
Depends on: no. of offspring per reproduction Chances of offspring surviving until reproduction How often each individual reproduces Age at which reproduction begins
Exponential growth
Accelerated growth of an organism
