Population Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
scientific study of the interactions among organisms and their envirionment
Community
interacting populations of different species in a defined habitat
Ecosystem
all the living organism in an area and the nonliving parts of the environment with which they interact
Random distribution
individuals are equally likely to be anywhere within the area
Clamped distribution
high-density clumps are separated by areas of low abundance
Uniform distribution
individuals maximize space between them by being uniformly spaced
Exponential growth
unrestricted growth of population that is increasing in constant growth rate
Logistic growth
starts off fast and then slows down due to environmental factors that limit their ability to reproduce
Carrying capacity
Abiotic factor
nonliving components of the environment that affect populations : precipitation, fore, temperature
Biotic factor
living components of the environment that affect population growth and size: predators, food, disease
