Chapter 18 Flashcards
Animal and Plant Diversity
Animals
eukaryotes that cannot photosynthesize and so must obtain nutrients by feeding on other organisms
Herbivore
animal that eats only plants
Carnivore
animal that eats other animals
Heterotrophs
organisms that cannot produce their own food and rely on consuming other organisms for energy and nutrients.
Autotrophy
the ability of an organism to produce its own food, typically through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, using light or chemical energy
Non-vascular plants
plants that lack vascular tissue to transport water and nutrients to the plant body
Arthropods
an invertebrate having a segmented body, a hard exoskeleton, and jointed appendages
Plasmodesmata
cell junctions that serve in communication between cells
Amniotes
tetrapods with a terrestrially adapted egg
eukaryotic organism
members of the domain eukarya share a common ancestor, as well as structural features including cells with membrane bound nucleus and organalles
Meosis
when the diploid sporophyte (zygote) produces haploid spores
Fungus
unicellular or multicellular eukaryotic organism that obtains nutrients by secreting digestive enzymes onto organic matter and
