Population density and dispersion Flashcards
1
Q
How to measure density of a population?
A
- Measure absolute population size
- Better to measure individuals per unit area because may occupy a large area and you can make comparisons between populations
2
Q
what are indicators that help with population density?
A
Nests, burrows, feral droppings
3
Q
Capture-mark-recapture method
A
Capture sample of entire population
Mark them
Release them
Capture second set and see how many have already been marked
4
Q
Percentage of marked individuals in second set = ?
A
percentage that first was marked of total population
5
Q
What is population dispersion?
A
How individuals in population are distributed over their habitat
6
Q
Categories of population dispersal
A
- Clumped
- Uniform
- Random
7
Q
Are populations static?
A
No, they’re dynamic
