Conservation approaches Flashcards
For effective conservation, need to know nature of threat:
- habitat loss
- introduced species
- overharvesting
- global change
How can we protect species threatened by human activities?
- restore or preserve habitat of threatened species
- combat climate change and other global environmental change
- establish regional networks or protected areas
- protect ‘hot spots’ of high biodiversity
- end over harvesting of species in decline
IUCn red list
threatened species
Main threats =
habitat loss - deforestation
overharvesting - hunting for meat
Extinction vortex =
genetic problems for small populations
evidence for this is the effect of introduction of genetic variation
How much of the current genetic variation in the population is carried over to the next generation?
Equal to adult population size if all individuals contribute equality to next generation
Important factors for population-level conservation
Mating systems and overlap between generations
habitat and landscape level conservation
- connecting patches of habitat
- maximise habitat types in landscape
- flagship species concept
Zoned reserves =
a landscape approach to conservation
protected areas to cover diversity of habitat types
