Population And Environment - Understanding P&E Flashcards
What are the 4 key population parameters? (Explain them)
Distribution = how the population is spread globally or regionally
Population = the amount of people
Change = increases and decreases in population over time
Density = population per unit of area
What are the 2 main types of factors affecting population?
- physical factors
- developmental processes
What are the physical factors affecting population?
- climate
- soil = water content, nutrient content
- resources = water supply, food supply
What are the developmental processes affecting population?
Technological = example is the industrial revolution, where living standards increased
Societal = war, sanitation
What were global population patterns like in the past?
- increasing since the 1960’s
- HIC’s used to have the highest rates of population growth
What are the rate of change of global population patterns like now?
- HIC’s have the lowest population growth
- LIC’s and developing countries have the highest rate of population growth
- Urban areas have higher rates of population growth
What are population densities like now?
- urban areas are more densely populated
- sparsely populated areas are usually uninhabitable
