What is an insider?

Someone who feels at home within a place

What is an outsider?
A
Someone who does not feel like a part of a place

How may the feeling of being an outsider change over time?
A
- The person may begin to integrate into society
- may adapt the culture or language of that area
- they then begin to feel like an insider

Why may someone begin to feel like an outsider?
A
- large influxes of immigrants in the area may change the characteristics of the place
- high streets may cater to new cultures
- these changes make the area feel unfamiliar to people who were previously insiders

What is gentrification?
A
The renovation and improvement of housing so suit a middle class audience

How can gentrification make insiders feel like outsiders?
A
- increases in house prices and making the area suitable to a new audience may make people who previously lived there to feel like outsiders

What is the Other?
A
People who are unfamiliar or different to themselves

Why may there be tensions between people and the ‘Other’?
A
- its easier to be prejudiced against someone and dehumanise them when they are different from you
- people may not like that others don’t have the same identity as them (e.g ethnicity, race, gender)
