Population Flashcards
How has the worlds population changed?
It has changed by continuously increasing
What is the worlds population predicted to rise to?
The worlds population is predicted to rise to 9 billion in 2045
How has the average life expectancy changed?
It has changed from being 53 yrs old in 1960 to 60yrs old in 2010.
Where do more people live now?
More people live in urban areas rather than rural areas and there are 10 millions+ people live in a mega city.
Population
Population is the number of people in a natural place
Population density
Population density is the number of people per km square
Population distribution
Population distribution is how population is spread out over an area.
How does global population change?
Global population grows because the number of babies being born is greater than the number of people dying or the number of people dying is greater than the number of people being born
What is birth rate?
The number of babies being born per 1,000 people
What is deathrate
The number of people who die per 1,000 people
What is the population growth rate?
The speed at which the population increases
What is natural increase?
Natural increase is the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths during the year. The natural increase (or natural decrease) is negative when the number of deaths exceed the number of births.
Give reasons for low birth rates?
- the is an older population e.g. Japan, Germany
- religion/beliefs
- rural/under populated areas have fewer births
- children are expensive
- contraception
What are reasons are there for a high birth rate?
- young population
- jobs available
- where abortions are banned
- culture
What are reasons for low death rates?
- good healthcare
- safe environment
- hygiene/cleanliness
- good policing systems
- better life styles - exercise
- good lifestyle
What are reasons for high death rates?
- diseases/illnesses
- poor medical care
- lower hygiene
- high drug use
- bad lifestyle
- war
What is the definition of dense?
Crowded, closely together
Sparse
Widely-spaced settlement, empty
How is population density calculated?
Total population/total area (km squared)
Describe the global population distribution:
The global population is distributed unevenly. However there are clusters of densely populated areas in India and South East Asia. There are also very sparsely populated areas such as Russia and Australia.
Give a human reason an area is densely populated:
Human - social, political and economic factors, good transport and communication links e.g. ports, places to work, trade routes, political stability.
Give a human reason an area is densely populated:
Human: Accessibility, coastal areas with easy access to transport and trade
Give a physical reason for densely populated area:
Physical: resources - plenty of water supply, timber, minerals such as coal, oil and copper enable countries to develop e.g. Western Europe and Eastern America
Give a human reason for a sparsely populated area:
Human: social, political and economic factors, isolated areas with poor transport links, few jobs and a lack of investment and trade.
Give a human reason for a sparsely populated are:
Human: accessibility - interior areas of large continents such as Africa and Asia struggle to develop
Give a physical reason for sparsely populated areas:
Physical: resources- natural resources poverty that makes it difficult for a country to trade with other countries.
What is the difference between describing and explaining?
Describing is setting out characteristics and explaining is when you use verbs; explain WHY something is like that.
What is the definition of an ageing population?
The growth in proportion of older people (usually 65yrs over)
What is the definition of population structure?
Population structure is how many males and females of different ages are in a population
What was the population of UK in 2000
60 million
Estimate the UKs population in 2040?
I think the population 2040 will be 76 million because the population is constantly increasing due to natural increase
Is the UK’s population steadily or dramatically increasing?
The UK’s population is steadily increasing
Describe the trend in the UK’s aging population?
The UK’s population of aged 65 or over is gradually increasing. The population of people aged 65 million or over has gone from 14.2 million in 1976 to 20 million in 2016. However, from 1996 to 2006 the population stayed the same.
Why is the percentage of older people expected to continue to increase?
- fewer deaths in childbirth
- better working conditions
- far better healthcare
- better lifestyle choices
Suggest why the population of aged 16 - 29 is lower in the Shetlands than in Scotland
It is a remote place so there won’t be as many job opportunities
