the number of people in a given area
What are population parameters and why are they useful?
- different ways in which the population is measured
- can gain insight into the characteristics of a population
What is population distribution?
how the population is spread, can be global or regional
What is population density?
measure of population per unit area (eg km2)
What is fertility rate?
the number of children a woman can expect to have during her (fertile) lifetime
What is infant mortality rate?
the number of children dying before their 1st birthday (per 1000)
What is death rate?
number of deaths in population per 1000
What is birth rate?
number of births in a population per 1000
What is natural increase?
when birth rate exceeds the death rate
What is migration rate?
the number of people moving to/from an area
