population Flashcards
methods of data collection
census
civil registration
national, EU, global surveys
what are census’
census’ are questionares that collect information on every memeber of the popluation. they are a legal requirement and if not completed can lead to a £1000 fine.ONS are responsible for them in england and wales and then GROS are responsible for the distrubution in scotland and work under the NRS. these questionarres are handed out once every 10 years, and are a range of questions used to determine living conditions and lifestyle and provides data such as age, gender, ethnicity and income.
what are civil registrations
used as a population demographic is constantly changing and is used to gather vital statistic on birth, death and marriage. it provides limited statistics however it is up to date
what are national, EU and global surveys
these are collected by different organistaion:
uk;
general househould survey is annual and provides info on houses in the uk
YouGov; online platform which gives info on population data
Uk border agency; provides info on migration
EU; eurostar to collect date
Global;
population register in norway and sweden
UN statistical divisoon gives info on social and economic data
other sources of data
schools and colleges provide info on those in education
police provide crime rates
local governements give dta on building development and copuncil projects
why does the governement collect data
to forecast trends and form policies based on data
asses the success of current work
allocate resources and funds to councils
why does governement collect data - births
to plan maternity care and education services by location and it may also provide evidence for a population policy ( one child policy in china)
why does governement collect data - education
to show literacy levels and assess success
why does governement collect data - health
to allocate services and resources where needed
why does governement collect data - housing
to ensure criteria is met and that infastructure is adequate
why does governement collect data - ethnicity
to uncover racial inequality and tackle it
why does governement collect data - age
to tell if population is ageing so governement can make plans for pensions
why does governement collect data - benefits
calculate money needed and determine there validity
problems with data collection - expensive
in 2011 the cencus cost £482 million. they are also expensive to store so now they are destroyed straight after and the pub licity needed for the cencus is also very expensive
problems with data collection - people needed
there are over 70,000 people needed to get a cencus out to the population, may not be enough people to give it out
problems with data collection - time
by the time the data is collected it may already be out of date
problems with data collection - privacy
some say it intrudes on peoples privacy
problems with data collection -hard to count everyone
due to ;
people being on holiday
homelessness
illegal immigrants
travellers
students away from home
problems with data collection- language barriers
enumerators have to translate forms into multiple different langauges, could be more expensive and take more time e.g in nigeria there are 6 different languages so would have to be translated into all 6
problems with data collection- literacy levels
in countries with lower literacy levels they may not be able to complete forms or will make more mistakes leading to inaccurate data
problems with data collection- popluation size
in places such as china with a large population it may be harder to distribute the census
problems with data collection- accesbility
in countries where there is less infastructure and different terrain , the amazon rainforest ,it may be harder to distribute the census
problems with data collection- war
more difficult for enumerators to hand out census and data can be out of date by time it gets back
problems with data collection- migration
causes data to become outdated quickly
problems with data collection- deportation
those in the country illegally are less likley to fill our census in fear of deportation which causes inaccurate data on population
problems with data collection- ethnic tensions
can lead to innacuray in data, northern nigearia inflated populaiton to secure increased political represntation
population structure - developing country
pyramid shaped, narrow apex, wide base, tapers rapidly
why does a developing country have a pyramidal structure
