Poppo Flashcards
Facts about Poppo
Widukind of Corvey
‘History of the Saxons’ written after 968, dedicated to the daughter of Otto I.
Köpke
Believed that Widukind finished his chronicle in 968 but later revised it, adding the account of Poppo’s ordeal and so its placement in the text cannot be used to date it.
Gelting
Believes that Widukind correctly placed Poppo’s ordeal in 963.
Ruotger
‘Life of Archbishop Bruno of Cologne’ written after 967, dedicated to Folkmar (mentions Emperors pl.) Ruotger writes thematically and not in strict chronological sequence.
Who is Poppo?
Two German bishops in 968 were known as Poppo. Most likely is Folkmar of Cologne. Poppo of Wutzburg became a bishop in 961 (Widukind says that Poppo became a bishop after the ordeal). Folkmar- Folk- Populus- Poppo.
Adam of Bremen
Covers up Poppo’s identity. Widukind/ Ruotger don’t mention baptism but Adam claims Poppo baptised Harald.
963
Count Winchmann the younger plots against his uncle Duke Hermann Billung. Winchmann attempts to involve Harald Bluetooth in an attack upon Saxony. Archbishop Bruno sends Folkmar to Harald’s court to negotiate.
965
In response to Poppo’s ordeal, Adaldag returns to Bremen from Italy, ostensibly to place the deposed Pope Benedict V into safety but probably to collect documents defending Hamburg’s interests against claims from Cologne. He rejoins the Emperor in Mageburg and obtains a privilege for Danish episcopal sees. Cologne never makes a claim.
Folkmar succeeds Bruno as Archbishop of Cologne
