Q

What is the function of starch?

A
  • store excess glucose as starch
  • good for storage( amylose is compact)
  • quick release of energy( Amylopectin is branched so enzymes can easily break down glycasidic bonds)

Q

Structure of amylose?

A

long, unbranched chain of alpha glucose. Coiled in structure due to the angles of the gycasidic bonds. its very compact so good for storage.

Q

Structure of amylopectin?

A

long, branched chain of alpha glucose. side branches allow enzymes to break down the molecule to get at the glycosidic bonds easily so glucose can quickly be released.

Q

starch is ….. in water?

what does this mean?

A

insoluble

it doesnt affect water potential so doesnt cause water to enter by osmosis.

15
Q

How does the structure of glycogen help with its function?

A

loads of branches means it can quickly release stored glucose in animals. Its also very compact for storage.

16
Q

Structure of cellulose ?

A

long, unbranched chains of beta glucose. when the beta glucose molecules bond , they form straight cellulose chains.

17
Q

What are cellulose chains linked together by?

A

hydrogen bonds

18
Q

cellulose chains form strong fibres called?

A

microfibrils

19
Q

what do microfibrils do?

A

provide structural support for cells

20
Q

What is the test for starch?

A

iodine starch

21
Q

describe the iodine test

A

Add iodine dissolved in potassium iodine solution to the test sample. if sample changes from browny orange to a dark, blue black color then starch is present. if it stays orange starch is not present.
