molecules of life Flashcards
name some biological molecules found in all cells and organisms?
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins,and amino acids
how does simple biological molecules suggest evolution is correct?
because all organisms on earth share a similar biochemistry as they all contain the same groups of carbon based compounds that interact in similar ways.( indirect evidence)
what are most carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids?
polymers
what is a monomer?
a small, basic unit that can form a polymer during a condensation reaction.
examples of monomers?
monosaccharides, amino acids and nucleotides
how are polymers formed ?
during a condensation reaction in which a molecule of water is released forming a chemical bond between the monomers.
what is a polymer?
larger, more complex molecules made of a number of monomers joined together.
what is the opposite of a condensation reaction ?
a hydrolysis reaction where a molecule of water is added to break the chemical bond between monomers.
what is the product of a condensation reaction?
water
