Q

Addition Polymers
-what does it require
-to make polymer from monomer, what do you do?
-how to name polymer
-how to get from polymer to monomer
-what happens to the carbons that appear to be in the main chain but aren’t apart of the double bonds? how are they drawn?

A

-alkene monomers
-open up the double bonds in monomers to link each other. the hydrogens go above and below.
-write normal name and add poly
-splice after each repeating unit (2C’s) and add the DB back between the 2 carbons
-they are still in the main chain but draw them branchy in the polymer.

Q

Condensation Polymers
-formation of what from what? What else is produced?
-what 2 types are there and examples?

A

-a small molecule from the functional groups of 2 large ones. forms a polymer and byproduct (h20)
1. Polyesters: esters
2. Polyamides: nylon, kevler, proteins

Q

Polyesters
how to create polymer from monomer. 2 types and what to do?
-how to get monomer from polymer

A

-1: remove OH and H from the ends and connect the spots if its all 1 type. (OH on one end and COOH on other)
-2: If the 2 are different, still remove OH and H off each end
-splice the O in the middle and add hydrogens to each end
