Polymers Flashcards
DMM1: Manufacturing Deck 8
What is a polymer?
Materials
consisting of long molecular chains made up of many
repeating sections, generally long hydrocarbon chains
Describe Covalent bonding
very strong intermolecular bonds where atoms share electrons between them to fill there valancies
Describe Van der Waals Bonding
molecules can distort each others electron clouds causing net positive and negative zones which cause a weak connection between tthe molecules
What is a thermoplasic ?
single unbranched chains of polymer which connect with only van der waals bonds allowing them to be melted and reformed easily
What are the three forms thermoplasics can take?
Amorphous solids
Crystalline solids
Glassy solids
Describe an amorphous thermoplasics
chaotic mess of chains which interact randomly with no overall structure
Amorphous
Low stiffness
Flexible
Describe a Glassy solid thermoplastic
at lower temperatures amorphous polymers cannot easily slide over each other
results in a hard brittle material
What is a Glass transition temperature?
the temperature below which amorphous solids become glassy solids due to restricted chain movement
Describe a crystalline thermoplastic
long chains form a regular ordered pattern with chains lying paralell to each other
what is the degree of crystalinity?
polymers contain both crystalline and amorphous regions, degree of crystallinity shows the amound of crystal polymer present
How does the degree of crystalinity affect a material?
Increased crystallinity
* Increases density
* Increases strength
* Increases melting point
What is a thermoset polymer?
long chained polymers are connected together in a chemical reaction creating cross links between them
how does cross linking affect the properties of thermosets
the polymer cannot be melted and reformed
only amorphous structures can be created
very strong materials as chains are covalently bonded together
What is a two part thermoset?
thermosets which form from the mixing and subsiquent reaction of two chemicals
What is a heat activated thermoset?
A single part thermoset polymer which cures under high temperatures creating cross links with its neighbours
