Material Properties Flashcards
DMM1: Materials Deck 1
describe stress and strain
strain: ratio of extension with intitial length
Stress: the force applied per unit cross sectional area
what is the difference between plastic and elastic behaviour?
Elastic: low reversable strain where strain is proportional to stress
Plastic: Higher perminent strains where stress is not proportional to strain
define yeild stress
Stress at which plastic
deformation occurs
Define UTS
Stress at which complete failure occurs
What is Necking?
at high stress the strain can cause the cross sectional area to reduce
What is hardness?
Ability of material to resist
plastic deformation of surface
What is Ductility?
a materials ability to plastically deform as it is drawn out under tensile stress
