Q

Describe carbon fibres

A

Carbon forms flat sheets of covalently bonded atoms in hexagonal structure
Sheets bundled together into fibres

Q

Describe unidirectional CFRP

A

all the fibres in this tructure run in the same direction

14
Q

What are the effects of unsymetrical lay up?

A

Tension causes bending forces which twist and shear the material both under mechanical and thermal loads

15
Q

What are the effects of an unbalanced lay up?

A

tension causes extension and shear deformation which can cause layers to slide apart

16
Q

What is a Quasi-isotropic composite?

A

roughly isotropic
is symetrical and balanced
with layers evenly distributed through 360 degrees (usally 45,-45,0,90 )

17
Q

What is a plie?

A

a single layer of unidirection carbon fibre

18
Q

What is delamination of CFRP?

A

under an impact the thermoplastic can seperate from the fibres causing the layers to split apart and weaken the material
