polymers Flashcards
what is a polymer?
polymers are long chains of repeating units
what is in a polymer?
In a polymer there is lots of small units linked together to form a long molecule that has repeating sections.
why do polymer molecules require more energy to break than simple covalent bonds?
Because the intermolecular forces between polymer molecules are larger than simple covalent molecules,so more energy is required to break them.
are most polymers solid at room temperature?
yes
why are most polymers solid at room temperature?
due to the intermolecular forces between polymer particles being large, which requires a lot energy to break, therefore are solids at room temperature.
Are the intermolecular forces between polymers, weaker than ionic or giant molecular compounds?
YES
what does the fact that polymers have weaker intermolecular forces, than ionic and covalent bonds suggest?
This suggests that polymers have a lower melting and boiling point than ionic and giant molecular compounds.
