covalent bonds Flashcards
what is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is when non-metal atoms bond together, by sharing pairs of electrons
what are the positiveley charged nuclei of bonded atoms attracted to?
they are attracted to the shared pair of electrons by electrostatic forces, making covalent bonds strong.
where do atoms share electrons in covalent bonding?
in the outer shell
what does each single covalent bond provide for each atom?
one extra shared electron for each atom
does each atom make enough covalent bonds to fill up its outer shell?
yes
what does each atom get from having a full outer shell from a covalent bond?
each atom that has a full outer shell from a covalent bind has an electronic structure of a noble gas.
where does covalent bonding take place in?
Compounds of non-metals and in non-metal elements.
