ionic bonding Flashcards
what are ions?
Ions are charged particles they can ever be single atoms or groups of atoms.
what is the definition of ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding is when a metal and non-metal react together, the metal atom loses electrons to form positiveley charged ions,non-metals gain electrons to form a negativeley charged ion, also to make a stable outer shell.
How are these oppositeley charged ions attracted to one another?
These oppositeley charged ions are attracted by strong electrostatic forces. This attraction is called an ionic bond.
Between which groups on the periodic table mostly form ions?
Group 1 and 2,6 and 7 most liekly form ions.
What are group 1 and 2 elements and what do they do in the ionic bonding process?
Group 1 and 2 elements are metals and lose electrons to form positive ions(cations)
What are group 6 and 7 elements and what do they do during the ionic bonding process?
Group 6 and 7 elements are non-metals and they gain electrons to form negative ions(anions)
